Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.
Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast and brunch hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverside, you're spoilt for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay.
Dining Out
Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants, ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery. The surrounding villages also have culinary gems, such as the Laughing Monk in Strete, and Radius 7 in Stoke Fleming.

From Totnes, the English Riviera is easily accessible (including the steam train to Paignton). Torbay offers golden beaches, exhilarating sea sports, and quaint fishing port tranquillity. Head inland to Buckfastleigh to get hands-on learning about the animals at Pennywell Farm. Cute and colourful, Buckfast Butterflies and otter sanctuary is a must-see. And there’s another picturesque steam railway.
Further afield, the picturesque resort town of Salcombe is 20 miles away - its golden beaches and clear waters make for perfect lazy days, and are superb for sailing.

This lovely and well equipped apartment had everything we needed including a comfortable, super king sized bed (2x3 foot mattresses put together. Two great advantages were that it has its own dedicated parking space (a luxury in Dartmouth!) and it was only a very short, flat walk into the centre of town. The nearest supermarket was just a 2 minute walk away too! The interior of the cottage is very clean, but the press button to open and fill the kettle is broken. The surfaces of the non-stick pans are now damaged, and as far as we are aware damaged coatings can cause contamination of potentially toxic chemicals and therefore we are not cooking with them. We are only using the stainless steel pans. Also the draining rack is rusty.
In the spring we enjoyed using the outside table and chairs on the lawn. We now can’t do this because the grass is too long, and it’s sad to see this area of the garden also looking neglected.
Thank you so much! Perfect for what we wanted, a great central location that felt secure. Helena Aug 2024
Loved our stay at JC's Cabin. A very central location with the added bonus of a dedicated parking space, which is one of the main reasons we booked this property. When we arrived we were immediately struck by how light and modern the accommodation was. Our second impression was the excellent standard of cleanliness. The property was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We also loved the large, comfortable bed. Would we stay here again? Most definitely! Mark June 2024
"Great location, comfy and nicely furnished. Quiet but a short level walk to the waterfront, cafes, shops and restaurants. Perfect little bolt hole for a couple or single, with the valuable benefit of its own on-site parking." - Mary - August 2023
"The well equipped, comfortable and beautifully clean, apartment is ideally located in a quiet area for all amenities., the parking space a huge bonus in Dartmouth. We had a fabulous time exploring the area, and it’s many restaurants, and the weather was kind. Hope to stay again in the future." John - September 2022

"A lovely homely apartment with everything you need. Great location with lots to do and places to eat. We’ll be back." - Bob - May 2022
"Great for a couple, ideally situated just a couple of minutes walk to the centre and riverside. Huge bed and powerful shower" - Richard - May 202
"We loved our stay at JC's. Good location near the harbour, but not too near so not noisy of an evening. Very clean, big comfy bed, nice dining table. Annoyingly the shower room windows didn't open causing a steam build-up. For Consideration: 1. Supply champagne flutes; 2. Housekeeping to check lightbulbs ALL work; 3. Medium saucepan would be useful. Extra large and a small pan aren't helpful; " - Angela - October 2021
"We have been to Dartmouth over the years and more recently have stayed in rented flats like this rather than hotels. This was our first time at JC's Cabin and we'll be back. It's a small flat but with everything two people need. Although it's on one of the main roads in the town, it is surprisingly quiet which is great. Also, for those people who know Dartmouth, parking places are prized possessions and the fact there is one at JC's Cabin is great - it takes away so much hassle. The location 2 minutes walk from the centre is also ideal. We really enjoyed our break." - T Smith - October 2021
"Great small flat around 5 mins from the front. Perfect for a couple having a break in Dartmouth." - Jason - August 2021
"For 5 nights this place was perfect- central and having parking was a real bonus. We shall probably stay again sometime in the future and recommend to any of our friends wanting to stay in Dartmouth." - Karen - August 2021
"Lovely little apartment in the most ideal location for Dartmouth. 1 min walk into the centre and , everything you would need is in this apartment. Styled to a high spec . Private parking on site and it’s only a10 min drive to the beach . Perfect" - Glynne - July 2021
"We found JC's Cabin to in a great location, just a 2 minute stroll from the river and the shops and bars. It was very clean and just the right size for 2 adults. The parking spot was also invaluable, as it is really difficult to find parking elsewhere. The accommodation has a great shower and everything we needed. We would happily recommend JC's Cabin as a great place to stay." - Mike - July 2021
