South Devon Explorer: Greenway
Take this extraordinary glimpse into the beloved holiday home of the famous and much-loved author Agatha Christie and her family.
The relaxed and atmospheric house is set in the 1950s, and contains many of the family’s collections, including archaeology, Tunbridgeware, silver, botanical china and books. Outside you can explore the large and romantic woodland garden, with a restored vinery, wild edges and rare plantings, which drifts down the hillside towards the sparkling Dart estuary.
The experience of visiting Greenway is as much in the getting there as the house itself. Greenway can be accessed by ferry from Dartmouth or Dittisham courtesy of Greenway ferries or via steam train from Kingswear or Paignton. If you’d like to arrive by car you must pre book online.
You can imagine being a child roaming the halls and gardens finding quiet spots to spend a day reading. The grounds are spectacular with large woodland that stretches down to the Dart estuary along with vinery and peach house. A trip isn’t complete without visiting the boathouse, scene of the crime in Dead Mans Folly and the Battery complete with cannon.
You could tie a trip to Greenway in with walking the Dart Valley Trail or as part of the Round Robin.
The Barn Café at Greenway serves foods daily or take a trip on the ferry to Dittisham to visit the Anchorstone café.
