Things To Do

Summary:

10 Clarence Hill is a vibrant townhouse, stylishly decorated to deliver a cosmopolitan vibe in the heart of this ancient maritime town. Up to 6 guests can relax in the open-plan living space, before gathering for meals in a dining area bathed in natural light, with large patio doors onto a whitewashed stone courtyard. For the true al fresco experience, there’s a larger, stone-walled courtyard to enjoy the sun while sipping cool drinks. And all within a short walk to Dartmouth’s treasures.

Accommodation:

The entrance vestibule opens into the airy open-plan living space. To the left is the lounge area with soft seating and large TV. The well-equipped kitchen blends subtly into the space, with granite worktops, a dishwasher, fridge and freezer, an electric oven and hob, and a washer/dryer. The kitchen then flows through into the dining area, which seats six. Bathed in natural light from large skylights and a large patio door which leads onto a white-walled courtyard where there's an extra fridge and freezer tucked away.

Up to the first floor, the main bedroom has a king-size bed, plenty of storage and a large TV. There's also a separate large family bathroom and WC with a corner bath and a separate shower.

There are two further bedrooms on the second floor, both with double beds and plenty of storage. One also has a TV and an en-suite shower.

And there's central heating throughout for visits in the cooler months.

Outside:

On the mezzanine landing, a door leads to the secluded walled terrace garden - a brilliant sun trap, furnished ready for outdoor dining - perfect for al fresco meals, or a glass of something sparkling on a Summer's evening.

If you do bring a dog, they must be exercised away from the premises. The popular Coronation Park is just a two-minute walk away.

Parking:

A car park permit is provided for the Mayors Avenue Car Park in the town centre, which is a two-minute walk away. The permit does not guarantee a parking space, and it can get very busy during the summer and special events, such as the Royal Regatta week (during which the car park is closed).

Nearby:

A short walk down takes you to the heart of historic Dartmouth. Here you'll find an incredible selection of shops, restaurants, pubs, cafés, and galleries. From the embankment there are frequent ferries to Kingswear. Or, for a long walk, explore the South West Coast Path which runs out to the mouth of the river and past Dartmouth Castle. The closest beach is Blackpool Sands in the village of Stoke Fleming - a five-minute drive.

Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.

Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast and brunch hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverside, you're spoiled for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay.

Dining Out

Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants, ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery.

Shopping

Individual and independent; quaint meets quality - browsing Dartmouth’s locally run stores is a treat. From bespoke jewellery to designer fashion, eye-catching artworks and stylish boutiques. Venture into Foss Street and lose yourself in its variety - you’re bound to come away with a memento of your stay.

Towns to explore

The eclectic market town of Totnes is 14 miles from Dartmouth. Reach it by road or river to enjoy its broad mix of shops and restaurants (especially for some tasty, inventive, vegetarian and vegan cuisine). From Totnes, the English Riviera is easily accessible (including the steam train to Paignton). Torbay offers golden beaches, exhilarating sea sports, and quaint fishing port tranquillity. Head inland to Buckfastleigh to get hands-on learning about the animals at Pennywell Farm. Cute and colourful, Buckfast Butterflies and otter sanctuary is a must-see. And there’s another picturesque steam railway.

Further afield, the picturesque resort town of Salcombe is 20 miles away - its golden beaches and clear waters make for perfect lazy days, and are superb for sailing.

And one of the world’s longest and most-popular trails - the South West Coast Path - can be picked up by Dartmouth Castle with a choice of wonderful walks along this great stretch of coastline.

10 Clarence Hill is a fantastic place to stay for a perfect getaway. Everything you need is provided for a home-away-from-home experience, and everything is well-styled, tidy, uncluttered, and clean. The property is in a great spot in the heart of Dartmouth, near the waterfront, shops, and local pubs/restaurants. It is a wonderful find—we’ll definitely book with you again when we return. Thank you! James October 2024

"A wonderful stay in the most beautiful location! We had a really love time, relaxing and calming! Thank you for a fab stay" - Harriett - December 2022

"Thanks so much for a fabulous stay!! Your house is in such a great location and was exactly what we wanted.Beautifully clean and warm." - Bobbie - November 2022

"We can highly recommend 10 Clarence Hill. The house is beautifully furnished and everything one might need has been provided especially in the kitchen. The main bathroom on the first floor has such a luxury feel. We found the place very clean and as the heating is on constantly we were never cold. Only a 5-minute walk from the harbour, shops and restaurants and yet very quiet at night. A tip that might be helpful especially during the high season: booking a restaurant in advance is advisable as they can get booked out very quickly." - Nick Nov 2022

"A fantastic place with all amenities you need. Location is close to the centre just be careful when driving up or down the road it’s very tight' - Steven - July 2022

"This is a lovely property, in a great location, right in the centre of things and yet so peaceful. The parking pass provided was much appreciated with Mayor’s Avenue car park about three minutes walk away. The house is decorated nicely and is spacious and light for the most part. The outside seating area is a good size and a bonus in Dartmouth. The main bathroom was a very good size with a lovely big bath and a powerful shower. The kitchen was very well equipped on the whole and the fresh flowers were a nice touch. The board games provided were great for rainy days or quiet evenings in." Shayne - June 2022

"The cottage was beautifully appointed and very well resourced in terms of cutlery, pans, plates etc. The bedrooms were again really well designed with comfortable beds, really good bed linen and towels and the main bathroom was amazing!
Everything had been well thought out for use of space including the small outside verandah with table, chairs and barbecue that caught the sun most of the day. It was in a very good position for Dartmouth, a few minutes walk to the centre down a small hill. Dartmouth itself was a delight with much to see and do in the environs. The cottage comes with its own car parking permit for the town centre car park.
The cottage company was really helpful as was the housekeeper, answering any queries promptly. Only one thing to be aware of! The cottage is on a very narrow ( 6 foot width) street going up a hill. Although there are directions to drive to the accommodation I really feel it would be better to unload at the bottom of Clarence Hill ( only a few yards to the cottage). We found it hair raising to try and navigate such a really tight road! All in all, a lovely and really enjoyable stay!" - Deborah - March 2022

"Wonderful home in beautiful Dartmouth. Plenty of space and natural light. Set back off the road so very peaceful but also close ( a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Dartmouth). Great to be able to take the dog to Coronation Park as well. We would definitely stay here again!" - Kate - October 2021

"This very pretty cottage is beautifully decorated and couldn’t be better located. We had everything we needed, and the place was immaculate when we arrived with spotlessly clean bathrooms. The bedrooms were surprisingly spacious. We had a wonderful stay which offered excellent value for money" - Karen - September 2021

"A beautiful house in a very convenient location in Dartmouth town centre. We made use of the patio when it was sunny enough. The house felt luxurious but could be improved with mattress toppers to make the matresses a bit softer. All in all a very spacious and well equipped house to stay in for a week". Paula - August 2021

"I would highly recommend this property. Situated in an excellent location for all that Dartmouth has to offer. The house itself is very well equipped and extremely comfortable. We would mot definitely return." - Ruth - July 2021

"Fantastic place to stay. Beautiful house and all the amenities you can need. So close to town, perfect location. The garden terrace was brilliant and a must when the weather so good. Would highly recommend this place." - Michelle - June 2021

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 10 Clarence Hill. We’ve been holidaying in Dartmouth for 15 years now and this is by far the best quality accommodation we have stayed in. Thank you." - Jobu - April 2021

"We stayed for a week at 10 Clarence Hill, The house was beautifully decorated and was well kept in a great location, just a 5 minute walk to the quayside.
I would recommend this house for a great relaxing stay." Joanna - September 2020

"
Lovely property in good location. Very clean and tidy. Spacious, well planned accommodation. Great to have car park pass." Denise - September 2020

"A fabulous house in a really good location. This was our second time staying at this property and we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay. " Gill - August 2020

"
Everything to do with this house is amazing, from the decor to the location. Can’t recommend highly enough and for six people, in comparison to properties I’ve stayed in before, it provides excellent value for money. My only negative would be that the property provides one car pass, when for a property of six people you would reasonably expect to have 2 cars. It is a small downside, but does mean keeping one car on the park and ride at the top of the hill." Harry - August 2020

"
A very comfortable and well appointed house. It is certainly one of the best holiday homes we’ve stayed in. It’s only a few minutes walk into Dartmouth, although there are 2 steepish hills to negotiate!! We shall certainly return!" Gill - February 2020

"
Beautiful property, with luxury facilities. The weather was inclement and it was irrelevant in the house. We all felt very comfortable." Clive - December 2019

“We’ve had a wonderful week exploring Dartmouth and staying at your beautiful home. It was such a lovely place to return to each day and it went above and beyond all our initial expectations meeting every desired comfort and need. Celebrating our grannies 90th birthday could not have gone as well without 10 Clarence Hill and she was delighted with everything generously provided and offered. We hope to one day return. Many thanks. It felt so homely and we had everything we needed and more. Everything had been thought of. I would highly recommend staying here and it was amazing value for money!” Dominic, Mitte, Millie and Granny – 27 September 2019

“This property superseded our expectations and we would highly recommend. We booked our week in south Devon very late in the season and did not expect to find such fabulous accommodation in the most convenient of locations. Nestled at the foot of Clarence Hill (so no steep climb for my fit but octogenarian parents) it is a 1 to 2 minute stroll to Foss Street and its fashionable boutiques and galleries and then a left turn onto Duke Street and its timber framed buildings which lead you out to the harbour and spectacular river views. The allocated parking at Mayors Avenue again is only a 2 minute walk and on the way back you can call for provisions at the opportunely placed M & S simply food and or a cheeky beverage at the welcoming George and Dragon Public House. We took our 2 dogs and found a community orchard just a few minutes walk away where the dogs could exercise off the lead. The house is very stylish without compromising on substance. Top quality bed linens, fixtures and fittings. In terms of amenities Ikea doesn’t stock more. The host very generously provides an overwhelming array of consumables. The open plan living space is generous and airy and has clearly defined areas for cooking, eating and relaxing. The bedrooms are spacious and luxurious. The outdoor terrace is private and secure so no worries about the dogs absconding. It was our first visit to Devon but will definitely not be our last. We sailed on the Dart, took a hike out to the castle and St. Petrox’s. Dartmouth offers amazing scenery which we never tired of. We visited stylish Salcombe and the many villages along the Dart with highlights being Dittsham and Stoke Gabriel and Totnes. We took steam trains and open top buses to the English Riveria. Spectacular coastal drives and walks. We enjoyed our week in South Devon a county with an abundance of natural beauty, boats, steam trains and paddlers and jam on top.” Linda – 14-20 September 2019

“Lovely cottage with great amenities. Dartmouthis ACE!” Paul & Vicky, Ann and Dave (Diamond wedding) – 10-13 September 2019

“An absolutely amazing week in this lovely home – we don’t want to leave!! The little ‘extras’ made it a real home from home and having the terrace for outdoor drinks/BBQ’s was superb! The taste in decor/furniture was just our taste and the downstairs open plan worked perfectly for us. We will definitely be re-booking for next year! Hilary, Phil and Family – 31 August – 6 September 2019

“Another fabulous week spent in Number 10 – love it. Home from home thats for sure. Amazing, magical, LOVE IT. Can’t wait for third visit. Much love” Chris and Benson the dog – 24 August 2019

“Thank you for providing an amazing place with such a fabulous location. You’ve thought of everything. We absolutely LOVED it. We hope to see you again” The Johnsons – August 2019

“A beautiful house located in a prime location. There were many little touches at the property to make us feel like we were at home, and Christine gave us many tips on where to go to make us feel at ease. Everything in the house was pristine and of outstanding quality.” George – 19-24 July 2019
