Things To Do
Crooks Cottage is a newly renovated holiday home with all the homely luxuries you would expect while cleverly preserving this traditional Devon cottage’s character. The back garden is the perfect retreat for outdoor dining and outstanding views over the water. The Ferry Boat Inn is just down the road on the quayside along with the Anchorstone Café. Please note that some doorways and ceilings are low and that the area has steep hills. This property’s not suitable for children under 5.
Accommodation:
From the entrance foyer with space for coats and boots, there's the stylish open-plan living space - a blend of modern-meets-retro and traditional cottage features. Two comfortable, contrasting sofas centre around the large log burner with its original stone hearth - perfect for chillier winter evenings. There's also a large wall-mounted TV. The chic dining table with white marble top with brushed gold legs comfortably seats four with sumptuous velvet dining chairs. THe well-equipped shaker-style kitchen has an oven and hob as well as a dishwasher, kettle, and toaster. Off the kitchen is the utility room where you will find the washing machine and tumble dryer, a small freezer, as well as the ground-floor WC and access to the garden.
There are two bedrooms and a family bathroom upstairs. The master bedroom has a 6ft superking-size bed and a large wall-mounted TV. The twin bedroom has two single beds with wrought-iron bed frames and a TV. The beds can be combined to be configured as a second superking-size room. The family bathroom includes a bath with an overhead shower.
All the TVs in the cottage come fully loaded with the complete Sky TV package (including Netflix).
Please note that this property is not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
Outside:
At the back of the cottage is the paved, suntrap, courtyard garden, with an outdoor dining area that looks out over the river. It's the perfect spot for your morning coffee or evening fizz. Two sun loungers are also available.
Parking:
The property's location means there's no parking on site, although you can briefly pull up outside to load and unload. There are two car parks in the village - at The Ham and The Level - roughly 300m away (there is a steep hill up to ‘The Level’ car park) or free on-street parking on Riverside Road.
Nearby:
The Ferry Boat Inn is a one-minute walk down the road (don't worry, it is not known to be noisy). On the quayside, you will also find The Anchorstone Cafe as well as ferries to the National Trust's Greenway Estate and Dartmouth. At the top of the village, there's The Red Lion which doubles up as the village shop and post office. Down The lane you will find The Ham - a large grassy playing field and children's park. Blackpool Sands is the closest beach - a 10-minute drive away in the village of Stoke Fleming.
Please get in touch if you need any advice or tips on places to visit, walks (we're right on the South West Coast Path), pubs and restaurants, etc.

Fabulous cottage, fantastic location all round great stay. The pub, estuary and ferry to Dartmouth only 50 metres down the road. PS the Dogs also loved it.Michael September 2024
A very clean, comfortable, well-equipped and well-positioned cottage in an idyllic setting. Loved the (dog secure) back garden with views over the Dart. Didn’t use the car all week. Lots of walking, ferry rides and pub meals. A great break. Thank you! August 2024
Excellent location. Close to everything, including the car park. Couldn't fault the accommodation. Very comfortable beds and had everything you would need.Julie August 2024
Amazing stay loved it . Thank u so much Natasha Aug 2024
This is our second time staying with dart valley cottages and again absolutely fantastic service. Crooks cottage is very sweet in a perfect location a stones throw from the pub and the cafe and the water . It’s tiny but got everything you need and amazing little garden out the back with view of the water. We loved our stay. Candida July 2024
Thoroughly enjoyed our short break (despite the indifferent weather) and our granddaughter loved the cottage too. Very thoughtful to provide crabbing buckets and lines and and the crabbing was the highlight of our stay. Nice touches with Easter decorations on the door and Easter Eggs in our welcome pack. Would love to return in better weather and to be able to more enjoy the lovely outside space with stunning views. Janet April 2024
Crooks cottage is a lovely
Cosy cottage just seconds from beautiful Dittisham waterfront, with stunning views of the water from the garden terrace. The cottage had everything needed for a comfortable stay and the bed linen was superb quality! Katy Jan 2024
"Dittisham is probably my favourite place in the world hence booking Crooks Cottage due to its great location and little garden. Loved our stay, the cottage was quaint with a botanical twist! The beds were super comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked & the overall experience was gorgeous. However perhaps the best thing was the customer service. Dart Valley Cottages were superb to deal with, genuinely interested in making our stay perfect & I can’t thank them enough." - Karla April 2023
"Fantastic location - only a short walk for food and drink! Pet friendly cottage with amazing views over the River Dart from the patio. Highly recommend." - Phil - September 2022
"Comfy, high spec, gorgeous views and quiet. Great being close to the quay, pub and cafe and ferry. Quite steep hill" - Guy - July 2022
"One of the nest ever places we have stayed. Beautifully and sympathetically furnished stylishly appointed and making the most of space. From the moment we stepped in we felt relaxed and the guidelines for usage were just that, sensible respectful and encouraging of a shared experience in a beautiful space. We were a bit disrupted for 3 hours one morning with a workman coming in to lay a floor but I guess damage happens and needs repairing. A lovely week's stay messing about on the river!" - Whitesocks - September 2021
"Wonderful renovation of a fisherman’s cottage with lovely outside space- everything well thought out and all home comforts, great WiFi , comfy sofas and an extremely equipped kitchen.Easy to pop to the FBI and the pontoon to watch all the action ! One small suggestion would be to put some under bed storage in the second bedroom- just a pull out drawer would be great to help organise luggage . We would book this little gem again no question" - Christine - August 2021
"Wonderful location central to Dittisham. Loved the Emma Shipley decor, felt we were living in someone’s home rather than a rental. Only quibble was the dining table due to the base, quite small for 4 persons, however borrowed a table from friends in the village and problem solved. Would rebook for next year definitely." - Belza - August 2021
"The cottage is well maintained and comfortable. It is important to know that the ceiling height in the living room and doorways are very low. The beds and sofas were extremely comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Excellent washing machine and dryer. Lovely outside space despite being overlooked. We found there was very little space to store our own things in the kitchen and some extra shelves would help. The cupboard for guests provisions was tiny. We also found that many of the surfaces in the living room and bedroom had ornaments on them which we removed for fear of breakage and also as we needed to use the space. We also found that the seating area in the sitting room for having meals was very difficult to sit around as we couldn't tuck our legs under the table. Dart Valley cottages gave exceptional service when we had an unforseeable problem in the cottage at the beginning of our stay." - Alex - August 2021
"We spent a lovely week at Crooks Cottage in Dittisham, very much helped by the absolutely amazing weather for the entire week! We have been coming to Dittisham for almost 15 years and have stayed in various properties; we found Crooks Cottage to be a beautiful cottage, very clean with a garden that had the most lovely views over the River Dart. It's a convenient cottage for all that Dittisham has to offer, especially being a stones throw from the fabulous Anchorstone Cafe, where we ate most days - either eating at the cafe, or taking advantage of their takeaway service. The FBI pub is also very close by - they are doing really delicious take away pizzas! The cottage has pretty much everything you would need for a self-catering holiday, but we would have liked a cafetière rather than a coffee machine, which we just didn't get on with - maybe something to think about. We really appreciated the welcome basket, and the disposable BBQ - a lovely touch. The one thing that would probably prevent us booking Crooks Cottage again was the extremely low head height of almost ALL the downstairs doorways. We really feel this should be pointed out in the description of the property, as it is in some other property descriptions. Both me and my daughter are 6 ft tall and we both hit our heads pretty hard on a couple of occasions when walking from the utility room & garden, back into the kitchen - this doorway is very low, and even my wife who is 5ft 5 hit her head once here! It's easy to forget to duck sometimes!" - Jackie - June 2021
"We had a wonderful week in crooks cottage. The property was great for our little family of four. The location is brilliant. The garden was a wonderful place for breakfast every morning and watching the river." - Mette - June 2021
"Crooks Cottage was lovely - great location. The garden was definitely the plus point with wonderful estuary views. A few comments - didn't realise there was no freezer, we were bringing frozen dog food so that's just a minor point. The main bedroom is lovely but gets very hot, an addition of a fan would be really welcome." - Cuniffe Family - 2021
"We were very lucky to have booked this cottage. It was absolutely perfect for a half term break with the family. The cottage it’s self had everything you could have wanted and more. I just hope everyone respects the nice finishing touches the owners have provided. The only minor negative thing is the road in and out of the village and the actual road down to the cottage. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone. The ferry to Dartmouth from the beach is also a good day out. It’s worth every penny!" - Mark - November 2020
"Cottage was faultless, everything we needed and the location was great ,boat taxis ,ferries readily available to Dartmouth ,just up the river... Lovely village and walks..." Mark - September 2020
Dittisham truly is a Devon gem. Nestled a few miles upstream from Dartmouth, this unspoiled and tranquil village is perfect for a relaxing riverside break and really makes the most of its waterside location. Watersports, fishing, sailing, paddle boarding and leisurely river rides are on your doorstep. Or why not hire a boat and explore the valley at your own pace?
On land, the shoreline meadow makes for a perfect picnic spot. Downstream by the jetty is The Ferry Boat Inn – drink and dine while enjoying picture-perfect views across the river valley beyond. It’s also where you can hire a canoe or kayak and paddle the river’s shallower waters.
Dittisham is also superbly connected by river to the Dart Valley’s must-see villages, towns, and attractions. Year-round frequent ferries take you to the historic port of Dartmouth, picturesque Kingswear and the eclectic charms of Totnes. And, just across the river on the opposite bank, a quick boat trip takes you to Agatha Christie’s resplendent Greenway holiday home and gardens, now cared for by the National Trust, and an idyllic day out.
