Things To Do

Curlew Cottage is a picturesque holiday cottage with stunning views of the river and surrounding valley from the garden, conservatory, and master bedroom. In the delightful waterside village of Dittisham, Curlew is pet friendly and perfectly equipped for four guests to enjoy a relaxing self-catering holiday. It’s just a short walk to the village and the quay, where you can catch the ferries to Dartmouth and Greenway or stay and enjoy the locally renowned Anchorstone Café and Ferry Boat Inn.

Accommodation:

The front door opens into a small entrance hall with space for coats and boots and leads to a cosy lounge with a brick fireplace and open fire, a sofa and two armchairs, and a TV with DVD.

Steps down from the lounge lead to the very well-equipped kitchen-diner, with a tiled floor, oven, hob and extractor, integrated fridge-freezer, microwave, and dining area. A door from the kitchen opens into the conservatory with an additional dining area and views over the garden and river. The conservatory also houses the washer-dryer.

A narrow, twisting staircase from the sitting room takes you up to the two bedrooms and a bathroom. The en-suite master bedroom has fantastic views of the river and features an iron bedstead. There is a small adjoining dressing room.

The second bedroom has twin iron beds and a feature fireplace. The family bathroom has a bath with an overhead shower. There's also a small WC at the bottom of the stairs.

There's electric heating and an open fire. One basket of logs is provided between October and the end of April.

Outside:

The garden at the rear features well-tended flowerbeds, a lawn and lovely views of the river. A paved area with garden furniture lets you to make the most of this picturesque setting.

Parking:

There is no private parking at the cottage, but you can pull up outside to unload, and there are a few unrestricted spaces just along the road and ample free unrestricted parking around the corner on Riverside Road.

Nearby:

The village pub, The Red Lion, is a 2-minute walk up the road. The Red Lion also hosts the village shop and post office. A 10-minute walk will take you to The Quay where you will find the Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone Cafe, as well as ferries to Greenway and Dartmouth.

Dittisham truly is a Devon gem. Nestled a few miles upstream from Dartmouth, this unspoiled and tranquil village is perfect for a relaxing riverside break and really makes the most of its waterside location. Watersports, fishing, sailing, paddle boarding and leisurely river rides are on your doorstep. Or why not hire a boat and explore the valley at your own pace?

On land, the shoreline meadow makes for a perfect picnic spot. Downstream by the jetty is The Ferry Boat Inn – drink and dine while enjoying picture-perfect views across the river valley beyond. It’s also where you can hire a canoe or kayak and paddle the river’s shallower waters.

Dittisham is also superbly connected by river to the Dart Valley’s must-see villages, towns, and attractions. Year-round frequent ferries take you to the historic port of Dartmouth, picturesque Kingswear and the eclectic charms of Totnes. And, just across the river on the opposite bank, a quick boat trip takes you to Agatha Christie’s resplendent Greenway holiday home and gardens, now cared for by the National Trust, and an idyllic day out.

Curlew Cottage is the perfect place to relax, unwind and get away from it all. A beautifully presented property with fabulous views from the garden and main bedroom. Had all the amenities we needed. 10 minute walk downhill to the Ferry Boat Inn on the river for delicious pizzas, the Anchorstone Cafe for a seafood lunch and more fantastic views. Steep walk back up to the cottage but worth the effort! Easy to get ferries to and from Dartmouth so can leave the car behind. We had an excellent stay, really recharged the batteries. Highly recommend Curlew Cottage. Emma September 2024

We had a really lovely stay at Curlew Cottage and loved being in Dittisham which is a thriving little village. We were 2 adults and 2 teens (plus a dog) and the cottage was cosy but big enough for the 4 of us.
The view from the house and garden was amazing and we made the most of it by spending our time in the conservatory and garden.
Curlew cottage was really comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed for the week.

My only minor negative is that a welcome hamper would have been a nice touch :-) Rachel August 2024

We had another wonderfully restful and relaxing stay at Curlew cottage this year. As before the cottage was spotlessly clean and the garden so peaceful. We love the personal touch that has gone into the decor to create an obviously well loved holiday home. The cottage has everything we needed for a fantastic holiday and we hope to be back next year. Peter July 2024

"A really nice place to stay for a few days, well equipped cottage. Very tranquil place with charm to rest and relax. Nice walks in the area." - Pauline - August 2023

"Cottage certainly lived up to expectations. Helped by the sunny and warm weather during our stay, we loved our two weeks here. View from the garden is simply stunning, cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the beautiful River Dart, using the little and bigger ferries on the river to get to and from Greenway and Dartmouth. So much to see and do in this beautiful part of the country. We will be back!" - Mark - June 2023

"We’ve stayed at many places around the United States and around the world, and Curlew Cottage in Dittisham is one of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed. The house is so extremely well appointed. The kitchen had all the dishes and pots and pans and utensils you could ever want. The appliances were all modern. Cleaning supplies and laundry detergent was supplied. The bathrooms were spotless and well supplied, too. We spent much of our 5 days there sitting in the sun room or out in the back garden. Others have commented on the steep stairs to the bedrooms. My wife and I are pushing 80 and they didn’t bother us. The village of Dittisham is kind of small and isolated. But we enjoyed strolling around the village and taking trips to places like Dartmouth, Brixham, and Looe. One word of warning. The roads leading into and out of Dittisham are frequently just one narrow lane. And it could be kind of scary negotiating those narrow lanes with traffic coming the opposite way." - Thomas - May 2023

"Fantastic cottage with great views of the Dart Estuary Spotlessly clean cottage and well equipped. Lovely conservatory for use on Warner days" - Goodwin - February 2022

Curlew is our current favourite - fantastic view, comfortable and well-equipped. A few suggestions: a dishwasher would be great / hot water for bath requires Immersion heater to be on permanent. A hose pipe would be useful ( dog spray down in garden )" - Slocombe - October 2021.

"Curlew Cottage was exactly how it had been described - there was nothing disappointing about it at all and I wanted for nothing more while I was there - except maybe for larger bath towels! It was perfectly equipped for 4 people, you wouldn't have wanted anyone over for supper as it really was catered just for 4. The quality of the sheets were so nice which really makes a difference and the pillows very comfortable. It was a great place to write - which is why I was there for nearly a month. Very peaceful and lovely walks. I would highly recommend. My 83 year old Mum came and stayed and I would say that the hills back-up from the river were too much for her and she is very fit." - Keeling - July 2021

"A peaceful retreat with wonderful river view.Good to return to its quiet location at the end of a day spent visiting old haunts. A comfortable and well equipped cottage and the swifts circling at dusk were a special treat." - Damerell - July 2021

"We had a really relaxing couple of weeks at Curlew Cottage. The location was really close to the centre of Dittisham but still very quiet and the view from the garden as spectacular as before. The cottage was really clean and well presented with everything that we needed for our holiday." - Peter - June 2021

"This was our second time to Curlew cottage. It is well presented internally and has a lovely garden with the most amazing views of the river Dart. Upstairs has two good size bedrooms with luxurious White Co bedding, so beds are really comfortable. The stairs are very steep which is nice and quirky and makes you appreciate how old the property is, but May not be suitable for elderly or very young children. Downstairs the lounge is a bit dark, but on both stays we have never used the lounge as the property has a wonderful conservatory at the back - who wants to sit and watch TV when you can spend your evening watching the wide variety of birds fly past and enjoy what’s happening on the river below." - Karen - May 2021

"Lovely location.and of course views.parking was easy close to cottage. Could not find any house instructions so unable to recycle as did not know collection days. But a relaxing break." Sarah - September 2020

"We had a great stay for the week beginning 21st August. The phenomenal views over the Dart from the back of the house make the stay memorable. The conservatory was ideal for feeding baby, distance working (wifi was satisfactory) and evening meals. The kitchen radiator and the bathroom towel rail provided the perfect heat to dry out baby clothes and wet raincoats. Wonderful hot water and kitchen layout were comfortable. Induction cooker takes time to get used to if not familiar with it. Some of us found the bath plug a bit confusing. Slight lack of cooking things and cups etc due to Covid 19 arrangements. Nice privacy in the back garden, we were in and out and around and it was a welcome space and of course the view. Sometimes we parked in Riverside Road and at times we were able to park near the house which was handy for packing up." Rosalind - August 2020

"We had a lovely week in Curlew Cottage. It’s a perfect location overlooking the river Dart ,we spent most evenings having dinner in the conservatory with stunning views and we also enjoyed having a drink in the nicely kept little garden too The cottage was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. Some things had been taken away due to Covid but it didn’t matter. We would def return and stay there again, hopefully next year." Paul - July 2020

“Stunning property and fantastic views over the River Dart. Wonderful holiday cottage with once again excellent and professional service from Dart Valley Cottages. The property was stunning with wonderful views over the River Dart. The property had everything you needed and was well placed to walk into the pretty village of Dittisham. On arrival there was a tea tray set with shortbread biscuits which we felt was a lovely touch. Every room was spotlessly clean and the garden a delight too.” Janine 1 -5 November 2019

“Perfect short break. Curlew Cottage was perfect. It was presented to a very high standard with everything we needed and more. We had 4 perfect nights sleep in a very comfortable bed with beautiful linen. The view from the garden and the back bedroom window was stunning. It was just a shame that the weather was awful for the whole of our stay….We want to go back when we can take advantage of the garden and conservatory to enjoy the peace and amazing views of the beautiful River Dart.” Angela 28 October – 1 November 2019

“Charming terraced cottage. We found the cottage in excellent condition, bedding and towels of a high standard, kitchen was well equipped. Parking in Dittisham can be challenging but fortunately we always managed to find a spot nearby.” Agata – 27 September 2019

“Location outstanding – a very comfortable spotlessly clean dog friendly cottage. Last minute booking then a change of accommodation but we were so glad it was changed. Fabulous cottage with outstanding views. Spotlessly clean with quality bed linen and towels. Weather was mixed for us but having the conservatory was a real bonus, watching the tidal changes in the estuary, the wildlife and the weather was so relaxing. Who needs a screen. Curlew cottage was thoughtfully equipped for all your needs. Friendly locals in a very pretty village on the doorstep to so many stunning places to see, too many to choose from. Ronnie the black lab was very happy but exhausted and it was so lovely to stay in quality accommodation with your dog and be welcome with him in so many other places. The booking process was very straightforward and we would definitely consider using Dart Valley Cottages again. Thank you.” Jane – 23-27 September 2019

“This was our first booking with Dart Valley Cottages and we were pleasantly surprised. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and had fantastic views over the river Dart. The village of Dittisham is lovely and quiet although quite steep in places.” Paul – 13-20 September 2019

“It would be hard to find anything but praise for this beautiful cottage with stunning views. The decor and quality of the equipment was probably the best in our experience and would be difficult to beat. Dittisham is in an area of outstanding natural beauty but you do need to be reasonably mobile to achieve maximum enjoyment from this holiday.” D B Grimble – 6-13 September 2019

“Everything met our expectations. The cottage is in a lovely position with great views across the Dart estuary. Everything to a high standard including conservatory and small garden with patio.” John – 30 August – 6 September 2019

“This is our 3rd visit to Curlew! We were here on honeymoon in March 2015 and then again in October 2015 when we where expecting our first child – Edward now 3 years old!!! The Cottage is as lovely as ever and it has been very special to revisit all our special places and to be able to enjoy the garden our first summer visit!! The cottage is as spotlessly clean and comfortable as ever. Emma, Ian and Edward 18-26 July 2019

“My sister and I had a lovely break in Curlew Cottage. It’s very pretty and comfortable and we had glorious weather and so spent our breakfasts and evenings in the garden enjoying the wonderful views. We heard curlews every evening and were treated to spellbinding aerial displays from the swifts. The conservatory was a real boon. All in all a delightful cottage.” Penny – 5-12 July 2019

“What a lovely, characterful, comfortable cottage with a view to die for. Could recommend the area highly. Dittisham is the most wonderful place, the cottage a fabulous, charming bolthole and the view to die for…” Adrian, Rebecca and Hugo the dog – 28 June – 5 July 2019

“We’ve had a lovely week in Dittisham and Curlew Cottage has the most wonderful views. This is the holiday here and we hope to be back” Tracey and David – 21-28 June 2019

“Relaxation from the minute we walked through the door. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated, so well equipped and spotlessly clean. But the view – fantastic at all times of day and in all weathers. This was our third visit for good reason – we can’t think of a better place to relax and unwind. Dittisham itself is delightful and there is always something to do or watch on the river – also very dog friendly. The cottage is full of character , very comfortable and has the most amazing little garden and spectacular views of the ever changing River Dart – cannot wait to return next year” Peter and Lisa- 31 May – 14 June 2019

“A lovely cosy cottage with spectacular views – very homely” Dawn, Tony, Alisha, Daisy and Mollie – 24-31 May 2019

“Great cottage with fantastic views. We stayed at Curlew Cottage late May and luckily had great weather. Cottage is lovely, really well decorated and clean and spectacular views of the river Dart from the conservatory. Nice little garden with good furniture. Great location in Dittisham, can thoroughly recommend it. Have stayed in a few cottages in Dittisham and this id the best. We have not had the TV on once as we have just loved spending our evenings in the conservatory watching and listening to the wildlife including an owl flying straight over us and a long eared mouse coming past. Hope to return” Karen and Jim – 17-24 May 2019

“This cottage is beautiful. What an amazing view. We had a wonderful week here. Enjoyed our days out visiting Greenway, Dartmouth and Dartmoor etc but the best part of our holiday was sitting watching the beautiful view. We will definitely return. “Lovely cottage with views of the Dart Valley. Very comfortable cottage in a great village location with views across the beautiful River Dart to Stoke Gabriel. The cottage is very clean, warm, cosy and furnished to a high specification. There are some great books about the local area which we enjoyed reading by the log fire. Within easy walking distance to pubs, shop and restaurant in Dittisham. Loved the way the owners had retained the quirkiness and charm of the old cottage with their own individual touches, interesting prints, details, books etc. It is the sort of cottage where you knew you could find everything you wanted and excellent quality.
