Things To Do

Donore is a superb 200-year-old cottage in unspoilt Dittisham, with excellent views over the village towards the river Dart and the countryside beyond. It has a wealth of charm and character throughout and is decorated to an extremely high standard. The large, lawned, garden is planted with shrubbery and flowerbeds. A canopied and an open patio gives you a choice of spaces for you to relax and dine. There’s parking for two cars, plus ideally located for the riverside and village amenities.

Accommodation:

The front door leads into the large but cosy open-plan living room. It's filled with character with a slate floor throughout, exposed beams, and whitewashed stone walls. The lounge area has three sofas and a TV. (The pictured log burner is for decoration only).

The dining area has a long table that comfortably seats seven. Off the living room is a separate cosy snug with river views, a TV and a DVD player.

A large spacious kitchen features a family-size table and chairs, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, separate freezer, induction hob, electric cooker, and a docking station.

A utility room houses the washing machine and tumble dryer. From there, a stable door leads to one of the patios and onto the garden. There's also a ground-floor WC.

There are two bedrooms - an en-suite double room, and a second superking-size room (which can be configured into two single beds upon request when booking)

The large family bathroom has a bath and a separate shower.

Upstairs on the second-floor, another large bedroom set into the eaves with three single beds and river views from the Velux windows.

Outside:

Immediately adjacent to the cottage is the first of the two patios with outdoor furniture and views of the river. The cottage has a large, sloped grassy garden which leads to the second patio area complete with garden furniture.

Parking:

There is private off-road parking for two cars.

Nearby:

The village pub The Red Lion Inn is a 2-minute walk up the road. The pub also hosts the village shop and Post Office. A 5-minute walk in the opposite direction will take you down to The Quay where you will find the Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone Cafe as well as ferries to Agatha Christie's holiday estate 'Greenway' and also ferries to Dartmouth.

Availability:

During peak season (May, June, July, and August) we need to keep to Saturday changeovers and a minimum stay of 7 nights. However, please do contact us with any requests you may have and we will accommodate if at all possible.

Out of peak season, we don't need to keep to a Saturday changeover.

Please get in touch if you need any advice or tips on places to visit, walks (we're right on the South West Coast Path), pubs and restaurants, etc.

Dittisham truly is a Devon gem. Nestled a few miles upstream from Dartmouth, this unspoiled and tranquil village is perfect for a relaxing riverside break and really makes the most of its waterside location. Watersports, fishing, sailing, paddle boarding and leisurely river rides are on your doorstep. Or why not hire a boat and explore the valley at your own pace?

On land, the shoreline meadow makes for a perfect picnic spot. Downstream by the jetty is The Ferry Boat Inn – drink and dine while enjoying picture-perfect views across the river valley beyond. It’s also where you can hire a canoe or kayak and paddle the river’s shallower waters.

Dittisham is also superbly connected by river to the Dart Valley’s must-see villages, towns, and attractions. Year-round frequent ferries take you to the historic port of Dartmouth, picturesque Kingswear and the eclectic charms of Totnes. And, just across the river on the opposite bank, a quick boat trip takes you to Agatha Christie’s resplendent Greenway holiday home and gardens, now cared for by the National Trust, and an idyllic day out.

Dart Valley Cottages are a very personal, excellent company to deal with. Donore Cottage (more like a small mansion!) was absolutely beautiful. So much in the cottage and kitchen very well furnished with everything needed to bake cakes, fresh coffee etc. Dittisham is a beautiful little village on the river and is so, so quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and would stay here again. Jacqui September 2024

Perfect four bedroomed cottage for four mates on a golf trip couple of smashing pubs in walking distance or another just a couple of miles away lovely friendly people Robin Oct 2023

I"f you are looking for a relaxing, comfortable and picturesque place for your holiday, this is the one! A family of 6-7 people is suitable as there are activities for all ages. If very old age, the hills are a little steep but there are many other things to do in the area. Highly recommend!" - Guest - August 2023

"Donore is a beautiful cottage set over a great garden which always has flowers blooming away and a useful spot at the bottom where you can curl up with a book !" - Campbells - July 2022

"Donore is in an excellent position in the village of Dittisham. It is a very spacious house, ideal for a larger family although we love it just for the 2 of us. From the garden terrace there are fine views over Dittisham lake (part of the river). This was our 37th week of staying at Donore. "- Archer - May 2022

"This was a charming old cottage in the village of Dittisham. Very warm when heating was on but a shame the woodburner was for show and didn’t work. There was also No welcome pack on arrival which we missed Also a shame we couldn’t see the river As tall trees were in the way ! However although it’s an old property we did enjoy our week. Certainly less hectic and busy than the village can be in the summertime" - Thorns October 2021

"We have stayed in this cottage many times and we love the village and South Hams . There is plenty to do locally." - Campbells - August 2021

"Great place to stay, will use again. The house has great facilities and loads of room downstairs for family activities" - Guest -July 2021

"2 Excellent weeks in Donore. The weather was excellent. A very comfortable, spacious house in a quiet, friendly village. Ideally situated for walking, sightseeing and reaching the south Devon coast. Close by are a number on NT properties." - Les - July 2021

"A cottage that suits my wife and I. It is ideally situated to explore the South Hams or just relax in a beautiful Devon village. It is a village that is off the beaten track and has charm and luckily none of the typical seaside attractions. If visited yearly you can feel part of the village and enjoy the village life. Exploring the South Hams and south Devon coast is easy from here. The cottage has everything that we need and is ideal if you want friends staying for a time. The garden, although it has an open aspect has views over the river Dart and a very secluded sun trap at the bottom. It is spacious and comfortable but retains the air of a 200 year old cottage." Les - September 2020

"
Fantastic week in Dittisham. Great cottage in an excellent location. Access to the river and views from patio make this property even more enjoyable." Paul - August 2020

"Just the best home to stay in for our 2020 holiday!!! Very roomy, and never been to another as clean and tidy as this one, first rate. The garden was just perfect and the smell of the lavender an added delight...parking very good. Thank you to your team and the care taken with communications in these testing times. No hesitation in booking again..." Perry - 1st August 2020

"
This is a delightful old cottage set in one of the most beautiful villages in England. The views are wonderful, and you can see the river Dart as it curves round . The garden is well kept too" Nigel - 18th July 2020

“Beautiful cottage in a charming location. Thank you for sharing your cottage” The Agers 20-27 October 2019

“Another very comfortable stay in Donore. The cottage is located in a very quiet location in the village which is both close to the river Dart and Dartmouth. The new cleaners have excelled in the cleanliness of the cottage and it was good to meet them. They are very friendly and extremely conscientious. It has excellent views across the village (following the removal of 2 ash trees in the car park below) and down to the river, where the paddle steamer can often be seen. The river gives easy access to Dartmouth and Greenway (NT).” Geoff and Lesley – 7 September – 4 October 2019

“Lovely Cottage in a fantastic location” Henry, Ellen & Co – 31 August 2019

“We were a family of 6, 4 adults and two children (7 and 10 years). We arrived in Dittisham in two cars within minutes of each other, even though we started from different locations! Great to have 2 good parking places, and WOW, what a fantastic view greeted us, a pretty cottage looking down on the river Dart. Opening the front door was another WOW, a huge lounge and dining room with 3 large sofas, and large dining table, with grand decorations…Another small cosy lounge , and a large kitchen diner on the first floor. We used 3 bedrooms all clean, and two with good bathroom facilities. The weather was mixed but we had plenty of places to visit, and lovely trips on the dart. A very grand place in a lovely setting made a very happy holiday.” Gathorne – 10-17 August 2019

“We usually stay in a different cottage when we visit Dittisham. On this occasion it was booked for the week we wanted. Thank goodness it was as we have discovered a gem in Donor Cottage and will definitely be back… We do not want to go home but do so with lovely memories of a great holiday but with achey legs!!” Mike and Chris – 22-29 June 2019

“7th stay in Donore. Really relaxing holiday. Looking forward to September. Back for 4 weeks. Thanks again. A holiday venue away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A cottage centred in the village of Dittisham in the South Hams. The cottage is spacious and very comfortable, set in its own gardens with private parking. The layout of the cottage may cause difficulties for people with disabilities. The stairs from the lounge to the kitchen level are quite high. The garden is quite steep. The cottage is ideally placed to explore the nearby coast and interesting houses and visitor attractions. It is a place where you can become and feel part of the local community, should you so desire. Thankfully there are no amusement arcades or seaside type activities. It is all about village life and living on the river Dart. It is cottage that I (we) have stayed in a number of times and truly hope that this can continue.” Geoff ad Lesley – 8-22 June 2019
