Things To Do

2 Fairfax Place is a stylishly modernised second-floor apartment in one of Dartmouth’s most-characterful buildings. Sympathetically renovated to showcase its historic charms, there’s also smart-home technology to control everything from the heating to entertainment. The partially stained-glass ceiling-height windows bathe the rooms in light and reflect the unique façade of this imposing, listed Victorian building. Great for romantic getaways, ideal for families and friends. A parking permit is provided.

Accommodation:

The lovely hallway of this second-floor apartment opens into the combined kitchen-dining room and lounge. The kitchen area combines the original stained-glass windows with modern décor, including coloured downlights from the marble-effect kitchen island and heated oak floors. It's well-equipped with an electric range, induction hob, microwave, Nespresso coffee machine (capsules not provided), and a wall-mounted TV - ideal for hosting a dinner party or equally a quiet night in.

The light, bright lounge includes a smart TV, a large corner sofa and a winged-back chair - ample seating for a cosy movie night

There are two bedrooms: The master kingsize bedroom; and a second bedroom, which has two single beds which can be configured into a kingsize bed on request.

The bathroom is finished to a very high standard with a freestanding bath, a heated towel rail and a separate shower with an oversized 'rainforest' shower head. There is a separate toilet located further down the main hall.

Google Nest hubs can be found in both bedrooms and the kitchen to access the voice-activated Internet Assistant.

Heating is provided by electric heaters and underfloor heating.

Please note: there are small steps inside the building's main front door, then 35 stairs to the apartment. There is no elevator.

Parking:

A car park permit is provided for unrestricted access to the Mayors Avenue Car Park, which is a one-minute walk away. The permit does not guarantee a parking space, and it can get very busy during the summer and special events, such as the Royal Regatta week (during which the car park is closed).

Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.

Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast and brunch hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverside, you're spoilt for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay.

Dining Out

Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants, ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery. The surrounding villages also have culinary gems, such as the Laughing Monk in Strete, and Radius 7 in Stoke Fleming.

Shopping

Individual and independent; quaint meets quality - browsing Dartmouth’s locally run stores is a treat. From bespoke jewellery to designer fashion, eye-catching artworks and stylish boutiques. Venture into Foss Street and lose yourself in its variety - you’re bound to come away with a memento of your stay.

Towns to explore

The eclectic market town of Totnes is 14 miles from Dartmouth. Reach it by road or river to enjoy its broad mix of shops and restaurants (especially for some tasty, inventive, vegetarian and vegan cuisine). From Totnes, the English Riviera is easily accessible (including the steam train to Paignton). Torbay offers golden beaches, exhilarating sea sports, and quaint fishing port tranquillity. Head inland to Buckfastleigh to get hands-on learning about the animals at Pennywell Farm. Cute and colourful, Buckfast Butterflies and otter sanctuary is a must-see. And there’s another picturesque steam railway.

Further afield, the picturesque resort town of Salcombe is 20 miles away - its golden beaches and clear waters make for perfect lazy days, and are superb for sailing.

Great little apartment right in the centre of dartmouth. Lovely and modern .. it was very clean on arrival and had a great kitchen area. Had an issue with no cot or high chair but was quickly resolved and both were there upon arrival. Easy to find and we managed to park right outside to unload the car. We stayed as a family of 5 for a few days in half term and we all had a great time. Thank you Hayley November 2025

A great find for a last minute, 3 night booking. Great location for exploring Dartmouth. Co-op opposite. Beautiful kitchen. Ruth Aug 2024

A second fabulous stay at this stylish apartment. Great spot in the heart of beautiful Dartmouth. The car parking pass is a god send with parking being at such a premium, especially during the summer months. Matress topper on the king bad made a big difference, much better this year. Couple of small points that could improve the apartment. Scissors in the cutlery draw, sofa needs fixing / updating and the fan also needs replacing as it can get very warm in the apartment with all the windows. Overall a fabulous stay. We will be back. Gary August 2024

No 2 Fairfax Place was perfectly positioned in the town centre. No direct parking at the property but a parking permit for a large carpark nearby (5 min walk), we also found a spot right by the property to unload. Lovely modern decorated apartment full of character for an old building. Lots of small flights of stairs up to apartment which we knew about. Beds were comfortable and well equipped in the kitchen. Perfect to visit and walk around Dartmouth as in the middle and close to all bars and restaurants. Would recommend this lovely place. Sally July 2024

The pictures are just as you would expect to find, a fantastic apartment in the heart of Dartmouth with everything in walking distance. The kitchen in particular is a lovely social space with the facilities all really well maintained.
Great communication from the Dart Valley Team, easy to find and use everything and the permit such a bonus, especially as it is getting very busy into holiday season.
The only slight niggle was pillows were all quite hard / high which wasn't the most comfortable, especially for our young daughter, but it's all personal preference on a pillow! The sofa is really comfy but could be done with securing into place as the long end side always pops away when you sit on it. Minor issues and wouldn't hesitate to come back. Kim March 2024

The flat was well located for exploring Dartmouth and the nearby area. Parking was no problem either. The flat had everything you’d need for a great stay, loads of space in the kitchen and a comfy living room. Stephen Nov 2023

"We had a lovely stay over bank holiday weekend at Fairfax Place, we know Dartmouth well and we loved the central location of the property. The apartment is clean and well equipped and very comfortable. There are a number of steps up to the apartment, which we knew about, but would not be suitable for people with mobility issues. Highly recommended." - Jacqui - August 2023

"We loved staying in Fairfax Place. The location was perfect for a car free weekend and the apartment beautifully furnished. Light and airy the property of was very spacious but cosy at the same time. We will definitely be returning." - Nicky - August 2023

"We absolutely loved our stay at Fairfax place! The apartment was beautiful and had everything we needed for our stay! We will definitely be back again next year!" - Catherine - August 2023

"Beautiful apartment with so much character and very spacious. Furnishings are stunning. Very homely. Great rain shower. " - Karin - May 2022

"Access to the flat is via five short flights of stairs which may be a problem for people with health/mobility problems, particularly carrying luggage up to the flat. This is not mentioned at all on the website accommodation details? The building is currently surrounded by scaffolding which is visible through all the windows. Again, no mention of this on the website, although I appreciate this may be temporary. The underfloor heating in the lounge was not switched on when we arrived, we had some initial difficulties trying to get it operational . We contacted the DVC helpline, everyone was very helpful" - Geoff December 2022

First of all, wow what a fabulous location your wonderful apartment has!! The apartment was fantastic and looked just like the listing photos, and we’ve enjoyed our stay there tremendously and would definitely look to stay there again in the future when we next visit beautiful Dartmouth. The apartment is very warm and cosy, and feels very homely to stay in and is ideally located in the centre of the town meaning you’re able to walk everywhere! It was very useful to have the parking permit so we could leave our car in the nearby car park during our stay, as even at this time of year there are very few on street parking bays available. Overall, we really appreciate what a lovely apartment this is, its fantastic central location and some of the quality finishing touches used (the kitchen and bathroom are fantastic spaces!) - it’s certainly a cosy and inviting place to stay in Dartmouth and would definitely recommend it! :-) - Tony - October 2022

"Beautiful flat, great location very comfortable and loved our stay…. Car permit was a huge bonus! "- Sarah - June 2022

"Very lovely holiday apartment. Have recommended to a few friends already. It wasn't the best weather during our visit, but we had such a lovely 'home' in which to relax in, it really didn't matter at all. Such a lovely visit. Lovely walks, delicious food, amazing galleries and shops too." - Abby & Shaun February 2022

"We had a great stay at Murray’s place, the location is perfect. Communication was prompt and check-in was really easy. We would definitely stay again." - Clare - October 2021

Communication was quick, friendly and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed how central it was, smack bang in the middle of everything. A wonderful place to stay!" - Mike - August 2021

"Brilliant central location. Very very well appointed Apt especially the kitchen. If you come in August parking can be tricky but we just made sure if we went out for the day not to come home before 5. The apt was spotless and everything of great quality." - Lisa - August 2021

"Lovely stay in Dartmouth, the flat is really central - right by the water and shops and restaurants but surprisingly quiet, much bigger than I was expecting and lovely and clean. Thankyou." - Phillipa - June 2021

“We stayed at Fairfax place, for 2 nights, with our two Children (4 & 10). The flat is beautifully decorated and clean. The moment you walk through the door you feel relaxed. It has everything you need, the kitchen is well equipped, the bathroom has a lovely rain shower and large bath. The 2 bedrooms are of good size with comfy beds and nice bed linen. The location has to be the plus point, you are literally in the heart of Dartmouth. Next door is a cafe selling lovely pasties, breakfasts, cakes etc. We ate in Rock fish one evening – the food was very good. We did crabbing on the River Dart which is just across the street, went on the ferry boat (5 minutes across the water) to get to the Steam railway, which took us to Paignton and back (worth doing). We booked these trips the morning we decided to go, there was no problem getting the tickets as there are several huts along the front where you can buy from. After a full day out we were happy to get back to the flat as it was so comfortable. There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and sandwich shops right near the flat. Across the road is a small co-op and Marks & Spencer’s food hall just up the road. We would definitely recommend staying at Fairfax Place. (Do note: the flat does have several flights of stairs with no lift)” Zoe – 27-29 August 2019
