Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.
Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast and brunch hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverside, you're spoilt for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay.
Dining Out
Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants, ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery. The surrounding villages also have culinary gems, such as the Laughing Monk in Strete, and Radius 7 in Stoke Fleming.

From Totnes, the English Riviera is easily accessible (including the steam train to Paignton). Torbay offers golden beaches, exhilarating sea sports, and quaint fishing port tranquillity. Head inland to Buckfastleigh to get hands-on learning about the animals at Pennywell Farm. Cute and colourful, Buckfast Butterflies and otter sanctuary is a must-see. And there’s another picturesque steam railway.
Further afield, the picturesque resort town of Salcombe is 20 miles away - its golden beaches and clear waters make for perfect lazy days, and are superb for sailing.

Great value, excellent location. We would stay again.Chris July 2024
A lovely house where the name Ferry View is suitable. Easy walk to local facilities and the car park permit is a valuable addition to being comfortable. Attractively fitted out and well furnished. Friendly and helpful neighbours Jonathon June 2024
We are a family of five and regular visitors to Ferry View and this was another great stay. On arrival the house was exceptionally clean with fresh bedding and towels. Over the years the owner has made improvements such as putting in a dishwasher and a freezer. Since our last visit the house has undergone further maintenance such as repainting, new doors, new furniture etc. Yes as some other reviewers have mentioned there are other areas which could be improved such as replacing some of the broken blinds and more crockery and equipment in the kitchen but overall this is a great house in a superb location. Great second stay at Ferry View. Previous stay was 5 years ago, all pretty much the same. Amazing views of the car ferry and train, which our 2 year old loved and never tired of! Walkable distance to the town and carpark. Bathroom and garden area a little tired but usable. All in all, a lovely stay and we were blessed with some May sunshine and hot weather! Meghan May 2024
We loved this house with its amazing views of the estuary and steam train! It was a short walk to the centre of Dartmouth. Very happy with our stay. Claire March 2024
"A beautiful property for our short stay. . The views from the lounge and 2 front bedrooms were fabulous. Would highly recommend it is also ideally placed" - Tanner - July 2023
"A spacious house in a good location with a little outside seating area with lovely views. The decor was neutral, but stylish with a seaside theme and the beds and seating was all very comfy. There were a few problems that need addressing with the fixtures and fittings, but nothing to spoil our holiday and have been mentioned to the owner, so now hopefully these are in hand? It was very useful to have a parking permit included. We enjoyed our stay and am grateful to the owner for being able to move our booking from last year, due to the Pandemic." - Heidi - September 2021
"Really lovely period property in the beautiful town of Dartmouth. Fantastic views from up and down the river. We had a lovely time." - Gianni - August 2021
Really lovely nautical themed house in a great location for Dartmouth and surrounding areas. House was clean and well equipped for our family of 5. Gorgeous views of the river dart from the house especially the roof top bedroom. Very short walk to the harbour, local town and park. Would definitely stay there again Kids enjoyed crabbing, huge ice creams, boat ride to castle and fish and chips from rockfish all in Dartmouth itself. - Emily - August 2021
"Amazing view from lovely house. We loved our stay in Ferry View. The house is really nicely done up and the location is perfect. It was our first time visiting Dartmouth but we fell in love with this charming town and hope to be back soon! We enjoyed a couple of really good meals in town - at The Angel and at Andria and The Sail loft is great for drinks. The second floor balcony is a really nice touch and I loved sitting there watching the world go by." - Lena - August 2021
"We adored our stay at Ferry View. We really loved the fact that, as we were fortunate enough to have the hottest week of the year, there seemed to always be somewhere to sit to grab a bit of sunshine - with two different spots to sit out in the back and one at the front of the house (and the window pocket up at the top!) There were some maintenance issues that we managed to sort out ourselves by finding an allen key and a couple of screws, but then we were ok. Be aware that the seagulls will be asking to be your friend at 4am if you're there in the summer and have the windows open. But a small price to pay to be in that location." - Amelia - August 2021

"We had a fabulous weekend in Murray's beautiful home. The views are amazing, location is perfect, the house is immaculate and we very much hope to stay here again one day. You really won't be disappointed." - Sue - June 2021
"It was a very clean and comfortable cottage in a superb position overlooking the river dart.Would definitely like to return in the future." May - 2021
"The house is in perfect condition, and in a great location, just a short walk from the centre of Dartmouth, and with great views. I will go back! You have to drop your luggage off on arrival and then move the car somewhere else. So try to keep your things in a couple of bags, so not too many things to carry." - Liz - May 2021
"High ceilings and plenty of large windows facing the river provide great views. Quality furniture and comfortable beds. Interior is tastefully decorated in bright whites and soft blues. Great quality linens and towels. Quiet location, away from the busy town centre, but close enough to walk to everything. Kitchen has cooking equipment and quality crockery and glassware. No dishwasher. Coffee pod machine available (BYO pods). Note: when buying groceries, the fridge is a small under counter unit but can fit a surprising amount of food for its size. No freezer. Ferry View is wonderful spot to sit and watch the river activities. Truly relaxing."
"Lovely house in beautiful location. Five minute walk into Dartmouth. We were able to bring our dog too. Customer service however was very good. The Wifi didn’t work when we arrived with teenagers and after emailing this was quickly fixed the following morning. Overall a lovely break." David - August 2020
"A stunning location with fantastic views of the river and the Higher Ferry, The location was first class and the house was well decorated in tasteful hues. The outside areas were great as was the size of both double rooms. My only gripe was the bunkbeds which were very rickety for 11 year olds so wouldn't want to see a fully grown adult on the top bunk! There is just one bathroom which was a problem at busy times but all in all a great stay!" Sam - July 2020
"We had a wonderful stay at Ferry View. The location was perfect for exploring Dartmouth and the surrounding areas. The views from the house are spectacular, especially from the top bedroom. The house it’s self is very comfortable and we are looking forward to returning soon." Allan - July 2020

Murray was really quick to respond to any queries and was very accommodating when we needed to slightly change dates due to unforeseen circumstances. Thank you Murray for sharing your lovely home and for being such a great host. We would highly recommend this property.” Lubeya 27 October – 1 November 2019
