Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years, to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.
Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverfront, you're spoiled for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay .
Dining Out
Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery. The surrounding villages also have culinary gems, such as the Laughing Monk in Strete, and Radius 7 in Stoke Fleming.
Shopping
If you prefer to cook yourself - or to stock up as you start your visit - there are supermarkets on the main road into Dartmouth (Sainsbury’s and Lidl). There's also an M&S Food Hall and a Co-Op in Dartmouth town centre, plus independent shops selling local produce.

"Lovely place to stay - fabulous cottage" - Lucy - January 2023
"Wonderful stay at Keepers Cottage. Great facilities at the golf course; swimming pool, spa, restaurant and bar. Also really well located; close to Dartmouth, Totnes and Salcombe, as well as Woodlands Leisure park that my son really enjoyed. The house was clean and well equipped. Beds a little soft for us but probably just a personal thing. We also enjoyed the collection of DVD's for rainy days. Many thanks for a great stay. We would definitely recommend." - Sarah & Patrick - October 2022
"Great experience. Enjoyable stay. Beautiful area. Use of hotel facility was a great bonus. Highly recommended." Faranak - August 2022
"Very homely and comfortable everything here you could possibly need to enjoy a self catering holiday. Pool and spa facilities are ace and staff very helpful. Dining at the bistro is also lovely with great staff and delicious food. The woodlands is a must if you have kids such a brilliant place it kept us entertained from 9.30am up until closing time. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable break and so close to so much picturesque landscape surely something for everyone." - Alcoat Family - October 2021
