Things To Do

Out to Sea has some of the best sweeping views where the river meets the sea. Nautical touches throughout this ideal family holiday home underscore the spirit of Dartmouth. French windows open from the living room onto a terrace to take in the scenery. Wake to an inspiring sight from the master bedroom balcony or the full-length windows in the top bedroom.

Accommodation:

Approximately 40 steps lead up from the parking bay to the front terrace and main entrance. The front door opens onto the open-plan living space with a dining area and well-equipped kitchen at the rear. At the front of the living room are the French windows offering truly impressive river and valley views, filling the room with light and offering access to the front terrace with garden furniture. The lounge area has two sofas, an armchair, and a TV with a DVD player. The dining table comfortably seats six between the living room and the kitchen.

Please note that the wood burner, is not for use by guests.

The kitchen at the rear includes a Smeg fridge-freezer, a dishwasher, a washing machine, an oven and hob, a microwave, and a toaster. From the kitchen, there is access to the rear garden.

The first floor has the master bedroom, a bunk room and the family bathroom. The master bedroom has a kingsize bed with a Juliette balcony which make the most of the panoramic views, as well as a TV and en suite shower room. The bunk room in the rear has bunk beds as well as an additional single bed. (If you wish to stay as a party of 7, this is possible, but there will be a £50 premium). The family bathroom off the landing has a bath with an overhead shower.

Upstairs again to the second floor, in the eaves of the property, is ‘the engine room’. This second bedroom has a double bed and dual-aspect windows, again looking towards the river as well as over the back garden.

There's central heating throughout.

Outside:

Immediately outside the living room is the front terrace with outdoor furniture perfect for al fresco dining with a sublime view. On the way up to the front door from the parking area, you will pass by a mid-level sitting area.

Parking:

There is an onsite parking bay for a medium/large vehicle.

Dartmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, from the castle at the mouth of the river that has stood for over 600 years to the cobbled quayside at Bayards Cove where the Mayflower was made ship-shape before its voyage from Plymouth to America in the 1600s, up to the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College overlooking the town, defending the nation's seas since the early 1900s.

Dartmouth's renowned variety of shops and restaurants are on your doorstep, including breakfast and brunch hotspot Café Alf Resco - a hit with locals and visitors alike. At Bayards Cove, see where final repairs were made to the Mayflower before she set sail from Plymouth and onto America. On the riverside, you're spoilt for choice for seafood dining and drinks while you watch the boats drift along the river. There are also fast, frequent ferries, leisurely boat rides, and not forgetting the steam train from Kingswear and its romantic route along the valley shoreline and onto Totnes and Torbay.

Dining Out

Vibrant cafés and delis, cosy inns, and sublime seafood - all within walking distance - including TV chef Mitch Tonks' go-to restaurants, ‘The Seahorse’ and ‘Rockfish’. Local favourites include Kendrick’s and Taylor's in the town centre, as well as hearty pub meals at The Floating Bridge and historic The Dartmouth Arms. The Sportsman’s Arms, as you head out of town, is a favourite for a Sunday carvery. The surrounding villages also have culinary gems, such as the Laughing Monk in Strete, and Radius 7 in Stoke Fleming.

Individual and independent; quaint meets quality - browsing Dartmouth’s locally run stores is a treat. From bespoke jewellery to designer fashion, eye-catching artworks and stylish boutiques. Towns to explore

The eclectic market town of Totnes is 14 miles from Dartmouth. Reach it by road or river to enjoy its broad mix of shops and restaurants (especially for some tasty, inventive, vegetarian and vegan cuisine). From Totnes, the English Riviera is easily accessible (including the steam train to Paignton). Torbay offers golden beaches, exhilarating sea sports, and quaint fishing port tranquillity. Head inland to Buckfastleigh to get hands-on learning about the animals at Pennywell Farm. Cute and colourful, Buckfast Butterflies and otter sanctuary is a must-see. And there’s another picturesque steam railway.

Further afield, the picturesque resort town of Salcombe is 20 miles away - its golden beaches and clear waters make for perfect lazy days, and are superb for sailing.

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay the house was spotlessly clean ,the views speak for themselves we would definitely return" - Paul - August 2023

"We had an enjoyable relaxing holiday at Out to Sea, Dartmouth. The information, communication and guidance by Dart Valley Cottages was excellent making the booking process and getting there easy and hassle free. The accommodation was clean and well maintained and matched our expectations. The view over the river Dart is stunning and we enjoyed dining on the outside terrace . We liked the location on the edge of town, it was quiet but only a short distance from a wide variety of pubs and restaurants. The road outside and parking is tight but we managed with an SMax people carrier and it got easier as the week went on." - Justin - July 2023

"Wonderful views, well-equipped and comfortable. Narrow road that would not be ideal for a large car but otherwise thoroughly recommended." - Lynn - September 2022

"The view is even better than the photos absolutely breath taking and we'd return just for that! The master bedroom with the double doors opening up also was another treat.. seen some amazing sunrise's
The building work and scaffolding made absolutely no difference to our trip at all. There was no noise and it didnt ruin our view to the right. Overall we had a brilliant time and were totally blown away by the view. Thank you." - Sarah - August 2022

"My fiance and I bought both our parents for a little get together in Dartmouth and we had such a fabulous time in the Out to Sea cottage. The interior is cozy and homey and the patio has the most stunning views." Guest - July 2022

"Lovely cottage with stunning views of the Dart estuary. I spent every morning sat with my book and a cuppa just looking out over the views from the main bedroom, so relaxing. The cottage was clean, well equipped and decorated to a high standard. Great communication ahead of my stay, and responsive during my stay. Be aware that there is building work going on next door until September, I was unaware until I arrived so was a bit disappointed by that. Also note that the road the property is on is incredibly narrow so only come in a small car, otherwise park elsewhere! Aside from those things I had a lovely stay and would definitely consider returning once all the building work is completed!" - Abby - July 2022

"Out to sea is a lovely house with incredible river and sea views. The housekeeper is doing a great job. The house was clean and the towels and bed linen fresh. It is well equipped and there was ample room for our family of 5. Ideally located the walk into town is steep but short and we walked back and forth with ease. Having a parking space is a real bonus although the space is tight. A small to medium car is fine but anything larger would struggle. The steps at the back of the house are very steep and not safe for children. The rear terrace was out of use during our stay which was disappointing as the front terrace loses the afternoon sun. Dart Valley Cottages are always easily contactable and a pleasure to book with" - Chris - August 2021.

"Out to Sea is a wonderful place to stay - this was our second visit and I hope we’ll be back next year. The cottage itself is lovely - spacious and with all the facilities you’d want - but it’s the view that really makes it so special. We were lucky with the weather so we really made the most of the terrace. The steep road can be a bit of a nail-biting drive but you quickly get used to it!" - Sarah - June 2021

"We have stayed in this house many times. The views out to sea and over the river are fabulous. Out To Sea is a very comfortable house in a narrow lane aptly called Above Town. There are lots of steps up and down into Dartmouth town, but well worth it for the location. Already looking forward to our next stay." Chris - May 2021

"A lovely cottage in a beautiful location with amazing views over Dartmouth. We had a wonderful stay in April 2021. Visitors do need to be aware that it is a very narrow road and the shared parking is really only suitable for a medium sized car.." Susan - April 2021

"We had a wonderful stay at Out to Sea. The location is just amazing, with panoramic views of the whole Dart estuary from the living room and bedroom and lots of outside space. We found it a very comfortable and cosy house, with a well-equipped kitchen.
Quite a steep walk up from the town but totally worth if for the views! We definitely hope to go back soon" Sara - Septeber 2020

"
Great location in a clean and comfortable property. Unfortunately we had an issue with a constant leak from the shower in the ensuite to the main bedroom which was very noise and caused us disturbed sleep. Despite the best effort of the agent the issue was unresolved although we did manage a makeshift device to reduce the noise." David - September 2020

"Excellent location and views. The property is well equipped and spacious. Note the access road is only 6ft wide and the parking is only for shorter cars." Adrian - August 2020
