Things To Do

Shippon End is a mews-style barn conversion within Dittisham Court. With great character and atmosphere, this cottage is designed around uniquely quirky odd corner angles, giving it an extra charm. Local amenities and the river are all within walking distance and, even though Shippon End has no private outdoor space, guests benefit from access to the four acres of communal gardens and grounds of Dittisham Court and a private parking space. Dogs are also welcome at Shippon End.

Accommodation:

The cottage is accessed via a small set of steps to the front door which opens into a hall leading to the sitting room and dining area The smart, shaker-style kitchen is well equipped with an electric hob and oven, integrated fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave. Off the hall is also a cloakroom and WC.

Downstairs, there are two bedrooms – a double with pine and oak furniture, plus a built-in wardrobe; and a twin room (please note the single beds are a little smaller than normal, at 2ft 6inches wide, so they're better suited for children rather than adults). The bathroom has an electric shower over the bath.

There's central heating throughout.

Outside, there is a private parking space for one car.

Larger Groups

Shippon End is part of a group of properties that can accommodate 20 guests in total (Damson, Primose, Orchard, and Shippon End can each host up to four guests). So, if you are planning a trip as a family and are looking to accommodate a larger family we may well be able to help you. All properties are within a short walk of each other (some neighbouring). Please do contact us to discuss dates and availability.

Nearby:

The village pub, The Red Lion Inn, is a 2-minute walk around the corner. The Red Lion also hosts the village shop and Post Office. A 10-minute walk will take you to The Quay where you will find the Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchorstone Café as well as ferries to the National Trust's Greenway house and gardens, and Dartmouth. Blackpool Sands is the closest beach - a 10-minute drive away.

Dittisham truly is a Devon gem. Nestled a few miles upstream from Dartmouth, this unspoiled and tranquil village is perfect for a relaxing riverside break and really makes the most of its waterside location. Watersports, fishing, sailing, paddle boarding and leisurely river rides are on your doorstep. Or why not hire a boat and explore the valley at your own pace?

On land, the shoreline meadow makes for a perfect picnic spot. Downstream by the jetty is The Ferry Boat Inn – drink and dine while enjoying picture-perfect views across the river valley beyond. It’s also where you can hire a canoe or kayak and paddle the river’s shallower waters.

Dittisham is also superbly connected by river to the Dart Valley’s must-see villages, towns, and attractions. Year-round frequent ferries take you to the historic port of Dartmouth, picturesque Kingswear and the eclectic charms of Totnes. And, just across the river on the opposite bank, a quick boat trip takes you to Agatha Christie’s resplendent Greenway holiday home and gardens, now cared for by the National Trust, and an idyllic day out.

"Lovely few days in a favourite part of the world Excellent little cottage, clean and tidy" - Judith - August 2023

"What a wonderful place and visit. Perfect location and great place. everything catered for and will be coming back!!" - Sam - August 2022

"Having grown up in North Devon by the sea, there never seemed much point in travelling to South Devon. But having discovered the Dart Valley and locale, I’m hooked!
There is such a wide range of activities which are well catered for. Cycling is fantastic although you’ll need an electric bike if your not used to hills. From paddle boarding to boat hire and ferries the river and sea offer a wealth of water sports.
The cottage was a short walk or drive to all this and plenty of other more sedate attractions to. Facilities and easy parking with lots of surrounding open space led to a stress free holiday." - Williams - August 2022

"Shippon End is perfectly located for surrounding areas. Village is small yet beautiful. Ferry Boat Inn and Anchostone cafe are gems on your doorstep. House was spotlessly clean, basic but had everything you’d need. Kitchen very well equipped and bathroom modern and a good size. We also took our Labrador and it was perfect. No private garden but there are several large grass areas outside the front door, with great views over the village. The Harbour beach perfect for those dogs that like to swim. Development is pretty and quiet, silence only punctuated by local church bells which was lovely. Only criticism is that main bedroom mattress was way too firm for us. You won’t regret staying here!" - Gaynor - August 2022

"We enjoyed a relaxing week at Shippon End at the end of September. The accommodation was as described and despite not having its own garden the outdoor space was lovely and we managed with our energetic dog very successfully. The bathroom and upstairs cloakroom were fresh, bright and very clean. The seating area in the living room was adequate but looked tired and close to needing to be recovered. The double bed in the main bedroom was very comfortable and it was beautifully quiet at night ensuring a good nights’ sleep." - Rab - October 2021

"Good location in a lovely village with an allocated parking space only a short distance from the front door. Very good instruction/info folder except contradictory info in book and on kitchen wall as to the day the bins are emptied. An unusual shaped property which is fine for two people, as we were. The second bedroom has two narrow beds which are in front of the wardrobe preventing access. It is well equipped (except that there were only four bowls which meant it wasn't really possible to use the dishwasher unless it was put on half empty all the time). We reported a fault on the TV which was dealt with promptly and a new one was provided. Only other improvement we would suggest would be some coat hooks near the front door. Really enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others." - Kate - September 2021

"Used Dart Valley Cottages to book this property, communication was good and payment was easy The property was comfortable, clean and well maintained, situated in the lovely village of Dittisham on the river Dart, with a short very reasonable priced boat trip to either Greenways(Agatha Christie's former residence) or the lovely town of Dartmouth so no need to drive which was a bonus. Access to the village is via a country road which is narrow in places so a need to drive carefully All in All a very pleasant peaceful Holiday experience." - Stokes - September 2021

We really enjoyed our stay at Shippon End, it’s in a great location and we really enjoyed the views from the communal gardens, it’s a very peaceful little area if you want to get away from it all. As a family of 4 we felt there was enough space, the second bedroom is very small though, so better for younger kids. A can opener was the one random thing we really missed one night! All in all a lovely week away." Sarah - August 2021

"Great place in a beautiful location! A wonderful holiday for us all. We packed so much in in just a few days. Highly recommend it." - Helen =- April 2021

"A comfortable refuge in deepest Devon. Recommended to anyone in search of peace and quiet. The cottage itself is very well-equipped and hosted by professionals who are quick to respond should help be required." - Simon - January 2021

"We had a 4 night stay in this property which is a reverse level style barn conversion situated in a quiet cul de sac which had lovely grounds and views across the River Dart. It was dog friendly , spottesly clean and had plenty of amenities. Situated in Dittisham which was a great base to explore Dartmouth and Greenaway house which are a short ferry ride away from the village jetty. A couple of great pubs in walking distance including the Red Lion which is a couple of minutes walk away." Martin - September 2020

"
Lovely little village with fantastic views and great walks. Away from the hustle and bustle of Dartmouth which is accessible by ferry or car. 2 pubs one which houses a small shop. Friendly people. I would suggest a car is essential if you stay here. There is no bus service. The cottage is adequate for 2 but may be a little cramped for 4. It stands in well kept communal grounds with stunning views." Susan - September 2020

"Excellent position in the pretty village of Dittisham. Quirky layout because of an unusual shaped building. Generally clean and good WiFi signal. Dedicated parking space which is essential in Dittisham." David - September 2020

"
Dittisham is truly lovely location and with two pubs there is always somewhere to go for a drink!! The property is well place with views to the village. Parking could be better organised but the property is cosy and adequate." Jon - August 2020

"
Great location in Dittisham with parking and kitchen particularly useful." - Jack - August 2020

"
Great location and the property was well prepared given the current c 19 situation. Weather looked after us as well and we were able to get on the river and go to the beach" Richard - July 2020

"
Dittisham is a beautiful little village, quiet and peaceful when we visited in December, and set amongst rolling hills. Cosy warm apartment in converted barns, walking distance to centre of village with amazing food pubs, and pretty foreshore. Dog friendly, with short or long walks from the front door. We visited with family, who rented other properties in the court, and this worked very well for a happy Christmas together." Alan - December 2019

We appreciated the welcoming flowers and the pint of milk in the fridge when we arrived.
