Things To Do

The Barn @ Fingals

An idyllic Devon getaway nestled in a hidden valley near the River Dart.

Tucked away in a lush, hidden valley close to the River Dart and the South Devon coast, Fingals is a delightfully quirky and character filled collection of holiday homes. A true hidden gem, Fingals is arty, atmospheric and wonderfully individual with a touch of eccentric magic, offering a peaceful retreat in an enchanting setting. Perfect for a family holiday with your four legged companions, The Barn @ Fingals can be booked alone or for larger family gatherings of up to 14 guests can be booked with The Folly, Wisteria Barn and Barberry Brook combining as Fingals. The Barn is a place to relax, reconnect and feel instantly at home. Fingals can also accomodate groups, from the romantic, streamside tiny houses for two, the Folly and Barberry Brook, to the spacious, light-filled green oak Barn for six and Wisteria (covered with wisteria) for four, Fingals is perfect for couples, families, and friends seeking somewhere truly special.

The Barn – Sleeps 6
Step into this beautifully converted oak-framed barn where high green oak trussess, floor to ceiling windows and a warm, welcoming open plan living space set the tone for relaxed, sociable stays. There’s plenty of room to cook, dine and unwind together, whether it’s cosy evenings around the grand piano or alfresco meals on the covered balcony overlooking the gardens. Sleeping up to six across a king-size ensuite, a double and a twin room, The Barn is perfect as the social hub of your group.

Although The Barn was never quite destined to house livestock, we’re delighted to welcome your four-legged companions instead. Fingals is also home to our two friendly Lurchers, so we can happily recommend plenty of tried-and-tested local dog walks — with more scenic routes than you can shake a stick at.

We kindly ask that dogs accompany you whenever you leave the property, helping us to prevent any potential damage or noise disturbance for other guests and ensuring everyone enjoys a peaceful stay.

Shared delights and location
All guests enjoy access to Fingals’ superb facilities comprising of a heated indoor pool, sauna, games room, gym and grass tennis court — plus abundant gardens, walking routes and cycling tracks to explore. The enchanting waterside village of Dittisham is just a mile away with riverside cafes, pubs and ferries across the Dart to Greenway House, home of Agatha Christie or down river to Dartmouth and its historic harbour.

Whether you’re gathering for celebrations, enjoying quality time with loved ones or simply seeking a restorative escape amidst Devon’s rolling countryside, this combination of properties at Fingals offers flexibility, charm and unforgettable holiday memories.

Note:

The Barn @ Fingals is part of a unique collection and can be booked by itself, with Barberry Brook @ Fingals (sleeps 2); Wisteria Lodge @ Fingals (sleeps 4) to accommodate up to 12 guests or alternatively can accommodate upto 14 guests when booked as Fingals

Nearby

South Devon has long been a sanctuary for those seeking tranquillity, restorative landscapes and creative inspiration. Just across the water from us stands Greenway, the beloved holiday home of world-famous author Agatha Christie. Now cared for by the National Trust, the house and its romantic woodland gardens, vinery and peach house are open to visitors. Wandering through the grounds feels like stepping into the pages of one of her novels.

You might also enjoy exploring the 1,200-acre Dartington Trust, a unique blend of visitor destination and centre for progressive learning. At its heart is The Barn Cinema, an independent cinema set within a beautifully converted 14th-century barn in a medieval courtyard. Here you’ll find an eclectic programme of arthouse and independent films, family favourites, timeless classics and the latest blockbusters throughout the season.

Dartington also hosts a vibrant calendar of summer festivals, alongside an excellent choice of places to eat and drink. We highly recommend The White Hart, Roundhouse Cafe or The Green Table for a relaxed and memorable dining experience.

Nearby, you will find Blackpool Sands, a stunning and sheltered cove nestled on the south coast of Devon. Renowned for its striking blend of golden sand and smooth pebbles, the beach is framed by lush pine woodlands that provide both shade and a sense of seclusion. The clear, turquoise waters are ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding, while the surrounding cliffs offer scenic walking routes with panoramic views of the coastline. Facilities such as a café, car park, and picnic areas make it accessible for families, yet the beach retains a peaceful, unspoiled charm that attracts nature lovers and photographers alike.
